Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
On the classic, firm, restrained side of the style range, the wine is better on the tobacco, cigar box, cedar, lead pencil and bright-red, spicy nose than on the medium-bodied, cranberry and cherry, earthy, leafy, palate. This is not a wine to hold for more development.

Brownish garnet. Quite bloody. Tastes better than it smells. Definitely fully developed, lots of leafy and mulched undergrowth but not so musty on the palate. Better balanced than the 1975 in terms of acidity.

Reticent at first, with classic tones of ripe, polished blackcurrant fruit and a nice earthy, truffly background, There is clarity here, and polish, with some pencil shaving and a sense of mineral elegance. On the palate this wine revealed itself slowly over the course of an hour, getting better each time as the fruit seemed to solidify on the mid-palate, giving it flesh and charm to add to its obvious structure.

Fully mature Las Cases with flavours of leather, dried mushrooms and dried herbs. Supple palate with a good finish.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Bright ruby. On the nose filigree, very delicately fragrant, aromas of tea, dried roses, raspberries, cool stone, autumn leaves, a poem, one imagines oneself in Chambolle yet one knows it is Las Cases. Slender attack, fine, very delicate fruit, the tannins have melted away, in perfect harmony with a delicate fruit, medium body, very balanced, here everything is in its place, this wine shows a truly great balance. On the finish again red-fruited, ballet-like lightness, long and finesse-rich. Great old wine cinema and a super bottle.

Château Leoville Las Cases
Château Leoville Las Cases

Château Léoville Las Cases is a wine estate located in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle in the Gironde department. In the Saint-Julien Médoc AOC, it is classified as a second growth in the 1855 classification.

The estate comprises 97 hectares of vineyards. The vineyard adjoins that of Château Latour, separated by the small Juillac stream. At the heart of the estate lies the Grand Clos, a 50-hectare vineyard entirely enclosed by walls, with its entrance guarded by the famous lion adorning the labels of the estate's bottles. The vineyard of Château Léoville Las Cases features a grape variety composition of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. The wine ages for 18 to 20 months in oak barrels, on average 50 to 100% new.

The second wine is Clos du Marquis. It has been produced since 1902. Anecdote: In a scene from the film 'L'Aile ou la Cuisse' (The Wing or the Thigh), the food critic Charles Duchemin (played by Louis de Funès) manages to identify a Léoville Las Cases 1953 'visually' even though he has lost his sense of taste.
