I am not a great believer in the quality of most second wines, as they tend to be a dumping ground for everything deemed not desirable for the grand vin. However, such second wines as Forts de Latour, Bahans-Haut-Brion, Pavillon Rouge de Chateau Margaux, and Clos du Marquis are serious wines that possess the character of their more complex and concentrated siblings, yet are more supple and accessible. Clos du Marquis is not to be missed in the 1993-95 vintages. This deep rubypurple-colored wine reveals the sweet, pure cassis fruit of Leoville-Las-Cases, good fatness, medium body, low acidity, and no astringency or harshness in the lush finish.

Clos du Marquis
Clos du Marquis
Clos du Marquis brand was created in the late nineteenth century by Theophilus Skawinska, director of Chateau Las Cases, great-grandfather of the current director, Jean-Hubert Delon. Thus, the Clos du Marquis was long the second wine of Leoville Las Cases. It is now, roughly since the 1989 vintage, another wine of Las Cases mainly from outside, as opposed to the general Clos de Las Cases. The Clos du Marquis is the expression of a type of local St. Julien also surrounded by prestigious vineyards such as Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Leoville Poyferre, Leoville Barton, Lagrange, Talbot. .
