The 1997 Les Forts de Latour reveals a rich, blackberry, jammy (the French call it confiture) nose nicely intermingled with spice and earth. Soft, with low acidity, medium body, and good length, this plump, precocious tasting Les Forts de Latour should drink well during its first decade of life.
Like so many of the 1997s I tasted, Latour's offerings are extremely evolved, soft, precocious tasting wines that are easy to comprehend

Dark red. Good intensity. Lively. Net. Medium intensity. Fruity. A bit of animal scent. Rather round and very smooth in its tannic structure, which evolves to a nice tast of licorice and a hint of ripe fruit in the final. Medium and pleasant persistence while remaining simple. Can age a bit.

At the heart of the estate, the main parcel, called "l'Enclos", is made up of 47 hectares of old vines that are preciously maintained, because only they are able to give birth to the "Grand Vin". The 18 hectares of exterior plots, the vines less than 10 years old and the possibly downgraded cuvées produce the second wine of the estate, "Les Forts de Latour". The wine of Château Latour is an example of regularity regardless of the quality of the vintage. Firm, tannic and concentrated in its youth ...
