CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 1999

A mild winter, followed by a beautiful spring, accelerated flowering, then from mid-August to the harvest, it was a heat wave.
This Premier Cru Classé is made up of the 4 grape varieties of the vineyard, which is rare but identical to the 1996 (Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot not often entering together in the Grand Vin).
Château Lafite Rothschild 1999 presents a nice woody and spicy nose, the mouth is structured, balanced with a nice rise in power, with a lot of elegance. The finish is all in length, with notes of very red and ripe fruits.

Delivers wonderful dark chocolate, with raspberry and currant undertones. Full-bodied, featuring soft, silky tannins and a long finish. Very tight still. Needs time. Very layered and holding back.

Quite young, but fine to drink today, if you enjoy a wine in the middle of the primary stage that is just starting to become secondary. The medium bodied, elegant wine is on the bright, fresh, crisp, red berry side of the style range. Here you find forest leaf, tobacco, cedar, cassis, cherry and spice notes. Softly textured, with fresh, spicy, red fruits, tobacco and herbs in the finish.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1999 Lafite Rothschild is entering adolescence and beginning to show very well after an hour in the decanter. Offering up aromas of rich dark fruit mingled with cigar box, loamy soil, spices and subtle animal top notes. Medium to full-bodied, muscular and concentrated for the vintage, with lively acids and still rather youthfully assertive tannins, it's a fine effort that would rate higher if it displayed greater aromatic purity.

(04.2000) Dark red color. Good intensity. Lively. Nose of medium intensity. Fresh. Fine. Fruity. On swirling, notes of ripe fruits. Blackcurrant. Blackberry. Then fresh. Raspberry. Clean and supple attack developing on a juicy and quite full structure. The wine develops with taste and firmness without its silky and subtle tactile character that has delighted the cru for so long. On the contrary, the finish ends here on a tannic tannin without for the moment giving access to refinement. In this sense, it resembles many others. 50% of the harvest went through the concentrator.

(05.2018) Mid crimson/garnet. Such perfume and Lafite aroma! No obvious sweetness but real lift and delicacy. Racy Lafite character on the palate; this dances. Real class with some velvety texture and a bone-dry finish. Very clean and pure. It reverberates on the end – thanks to the Indian summer, we were told. Apparently this was chosen for the 150th celebration tasting because it has really started to open out since 2016.

Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild, 1st growth classified in 1855, is one of the most renowned Bordeaux châteaux. It shares the top position with the greatest in the official 1855 classification. Located in the Pauillac appellation, the 103-hectare vineyard is divided into three plots: the slopes surrounding the château, the Carruades plateau to the west, and a 4.5-hectare plot in the neighboring commune of Saint-Estèphe. The majority of the terroir consists of fine, deep gravel mixed with aeolian sand on a tertiary limestone base. The grape variety composition is 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines for the grand vin is 40 years, with the 20 hectares of young vines (less than 10 years old) being used for the second wine. There are also extremely old plots of over 80 years, one called "La Gravière" even dating back to 1886. Wine maturation is carried out for 18 to 20 months in 100% new oak barrels. Lafite Rothschild produces approximately 15,000 to 20,000 cases per year. The estate also produces a second wine, Carruades de Lafite, with about 25,000 to 30,000 cases. The name of Château Lafite Rothschild's second wine comes from the "Carruades plateau", where a group of plots was located, which was purchased by the château in the 19th century and adjoined the château's hillock. The "Carruades de Lafite" was formerly called "Moulin des Carruades", before taking on the name Carruades de Lafite.

The legendary vintages of Château Lafite Rothschild are 1921, 1945, 1959, 1982, 1986, 1988 and 2000, 2005 in recent years.
