Tasted 5 Times With Consistent Notes The 1945 Haut-Brion is profound. It demonstrates the essence of Haut-Brion's style. The color remains a healthy, opaque garnet with only slight amber at the edge. A huge, penetrating bouquet of sweet black fruits, smoked nuts, tobacco, and tar soars from the glass. The wine possesses extraordinary density and extraction of fruit, massive, full-bodied, unctuously-textured flavors that reveal little tannin, and copious quantities of glycerin and alcohol. It is a fabulously rich, monumental example of a fully mature Haut-Brion that exhibits no signs of decline. Awesome!

A superb wine, possibly the best ever Haut Brion. To describe all of its virtues and nuances is impossible : consistently deep in colour, warm ruby, with a rich mahogany, mature rim; its bouquet fragrant with vanilla chocolate, tobacco, earthy, harmonious, honeycomb, touch of liquorice; silky texture, crisp fruit, lucious, perfect weight, great length. A gentle giant.

Stunning finesse and texture that stretches out slowly and carefully, incredibly good, one of the true standouts of this tasting, nuanced layers of cumin, broth, saffron, dried cranberry, orange peel, campfire, baking spice, with a mouthwatering finish. Perhaps it’s not the 1945 wine that has received the most fame over the intervening decades, but on this tasting, it deserves to be seen as one of the all-time great vintages of Haut-Brion. Less than 15 bottles left at the estate. Haut-Brion was used as a military hospital during the first years of World War II before being requisitioned by the Luftwaffe as an officers’ billet, with manager George Delmas’ wife Antoinette famously protecting the wine and the gardens from too much interference from the German soldiers. Bottled as AOC Graves, a full 40 years before Pessac Léognan came into existence.

Served (blind) alongside the 1959, this was altogether nervier, chunkier, denser and, still, tougher. This wine seemed to have a very long life ahead even now, and will probably never charm quite as much as the 1959. Quite marked acidity and some nuttiness on the nose. Impressive persistence and possibly not yet at its peak.

Château Haut-Brion is one of the most iconic wines of Bordeaux. In 1855, it received the supreme distinction of Premier Cru Classé, an exceptional recognition as it is the only non-Médoc estate to feature in the classification of the wines of the Médoc, while also being classified as a Cru Classé de Graves. It is today an absolute reference of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Its terroir, close to that of Château Latour, lends the wines of Haut-Brion a unique nobility. Without seeking extreme power, the wine stands out for its elegance, the finesse of its tannins and a remarkable aging potential, often considered one of the greatest in Bordeaux.

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest, and also the smallest in surface area, of the Bordeaux Premiers Grands Crus Classés, alongside Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux and Château Mouton Rothschild. While the presence of the vine in the region dates back to Roman times, the first written mention of the vineyard dates from 1423. The estate was founded in 1525 by Jean de Pontac and quickly gained international renown. Its reputation was such that it played a part in the very birth of the notion of Grand Cru, mentioned as early as 1663 by Samuel Pepys in his famous diary. More recently, the estate belonged to Clarence Douglas Dillon, former United States Secretary of the Treasury, further adding to its prestige.

The first of the great classified growths to vinify in stainless steel vats, from 1961, the estate ages its red wines for up to twenty-four months in barrels produced largely by its own cooperage. Its great vintages mark the history of Bordeaux, from the 1931 wine and the post-war 1949 vintage to the modern benchmarks of the 1982 wine, the 1988 and the 1990 vintage, not forgetting the second wine Bahans Haut Brion, which has since become Le Clarence de Haut-Brion.
