Expert's opinions

(1-1997) A fully mature example of La Mouline, the huge, smoky, bacon fat, cassis-scented perfume jumps from the glass of this seductive, hedonistic wine. The 1982 has been delicious from birth due to its low acidity and fat, open-knit character. There is no amber or lightening at the edge of its dark rubypurple color. The wine exhibits a thick, unctuous texture, gobs of fruit, and plenty of heady alcohol in the blockbuster finish.

Looks much more developed than the 1983. Smells slightly unripe but then so juicy it’s almost squelchy. A bit over the top and animal for some tastes perhaps – almost cheesy. Carmen wildness. Very attractive all the way through to the end. Acid shows through. Acid comes back at the end.

Domaine Guigal
Domaine Guigal

The Domaine E. Guigal stands as one of the absolute references of the Rhône Valley, both northern and southern. Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, the family estate has built its reputation on an exacting interpretation of terroirs and a constant pursuit of excellence. Today led by Marcel and Philippe Guigal, the domaine embodies a heritage vision of great wine, recognized on an international scale.

Historically based in Ampuis, Maison Guigal vinifies and ages in its cellars all the great northern Rhône appellations, including Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. This same site also ensures the aging of emblematic southern appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, guaranteeing perfect mastery of aging and a coherent stylistic identity.

Closely associated with Côte-Rôtie, where it produces some of the most iconic cuvées of the Rhône, Domaine E. Guigal distinguishes itself with wines of remarkable depth and longevity. Vintages that have become references, such as Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 1985, Guigal La Landonne 1990, Guigal La Landonne 1989, Guigal Hermitage Ex-Voto 2003, Guigal La Mouline 1999, Guigal La Landonne 1989, Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2010, Guigal La Mouline 2018 testify to the qualitative consistency and exceptional aging potential of the estate.
