What a perfumed, elegant, structured wine, with all the elements of fruit, wood, tannins just in the right place. It shows great tannins, powerful black and red berry fruits, denseness, and a classic, fresh aftertaste.

This shows a rich and dense nose of blackberry, coffee and smoke. Full-bodied, with soft and round tannins and a long, smoky finish. Very fresh and velvety. GL is really doing excellent things these days, even in less-than-easy vintages.

A light more light, perfume and complexity on the nose of this wine. Classic Gruaud-Larose hints of game and earthy, animal aromas. Ripe berry fruit. The palate has lovely quality and a tingling spiciness. Black fruits, developing a touch of cedar, and lovely balance and finesse.

This is a wonderful, elegant Gruaud Larose that gets high marks for sheer drinkability. Fairly deep ruby with a touch of garnet, the 2001 is very aromatic, with notes of plums, dried flowers, cedar, and spices. There is a freshness of fruit, with tertiary flavours like chanterelle mushrooms and leather notes just beginning to creep in. The wine is just reaching its peak though it can still keep for at least a decade.

Medium ruby red, slight orange tones. The nose is expressive, less complex than the 2000 alongside, but beautiful, herbs, tobacco, forest floor, orange zest. The palate is accessible, matured to perfection, fine tannin, delicate fruit, aromatically red-fruited and with a touch of herbaceousness on the finish, this wine is less powerful than the 2000, but currently equipped with a great deal of drinkability. Enjoy until 2028.

Like many 2001 Bordeaux wines, this is on the evolutionary fast track. Tobacco leaf, smoke, creme de cassis, mushroom and spice box aromas work well with the medium/full bodied, gentle textures. Lacking the depth and concentration of the better vintages, this Gruaud Larose is already drinking well.

Mid crimson. Just slightly animal on the nose. Supple well-mannered palate entry. Then dry. Less luscious than Lagrange, and less luscious than many vintages of Gruaud, but it may well last longer.

Château Gruaud Larose

Château Gruaud Larose is one of the major historic estates of the Saint-Julien appellation, classified Second Growth in the 1855 classification. Founded in the 18th century, the château quickly established itself as a Médoc reference, driven by an ambitious quality vision and a reputation that extended far beyond the borders of Bordeaux.

Established on deep gravel terroirs resting on clay-limestone subsoils, the vineyard benefits from an ideal environment for the expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape in the blend, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This combination gives Gruaud Larose wines a pronounced structure, marked aromatic depth and remarkable aging capacity.

The château is also distinguished by its philosophy summarized in the estate's historic motto: "The King of Wines, the Wine of Kings." For several decades, significant investments have been made in both vineyard and cellar, with particular attention paid to sustainability, biodiversity and precision vinification.

Iconic vintages such as Château Gruaud Larose 1928, Château Gruaud Larose 1945, Château Gruaud Larose 1982, Château Gruaud Larose 1986, Château Gruaud Larose 1990, Château Gruaud Larose 1991, Château Gruaud Larose 2000, Château Gruaud Larose 2005, Château Gruaud Larose 2009 perfectly illustrate the estate's style: powerful, refined wines, both full-bodied and elegant, now highly sought after in the collectible wine market.
