Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1978 Romanée Conti Grand Cru is a wine that I thought I would never taste. This bottle was served at a private dinner in Beaune with Bertrand de Villaine present. The bottom line is -- it delivered. With a thin tawny rim it shows its age, but the bouquet is truly transcendental, a mixture of red and black fruit such as wild strawberries and raspberry, and a hint of pomegranate all beautifully defined. With aeration it begins to offer more secondary aromas, such as brown sugar and a scent of a Tuscan delicatessen. The palate lives up to expectations with very fine tannins, fresh and tensile with a veneer of shimmering dark plum and raspberry fruit that soon gives way to more meaty notes, almost ferrous towards the finish. It has almost unbearable finesse. Is it a perfect wine? Almost. As much as I could, I drank this, as it is just a sublime and evocative Pinot Noir. Tasted November 2015.

Allen Meadow - Burghound
My experience with the '78 has been mixed as well though the bottle tasted at Le Cirque was the freshest I have ever had. Almost completely bricked through. A classic RC nose that also evidences notes of caramel and brown sugar with delicious, seductive and velvety flavors that are still quite powerful and notably concentrated, all wrapped in an explosive finish of seriously admirable length. This really coats the palate with dry extract the penetrating minerality really comes through right at the end, just when you think the finish has lasted as long as it's going to. While not a truly phenomenal vintage for RC, I have always liked this wine though it has clearly peaked and even though it will certainly last for more than the next decade, the average bottle is displaying the initial signs of decline and for my tastes, I would be drinking it up over the next decade. That said, the best bottles are indeed sublime.

Great sinew, positively muscular in its impressive depoth of both fruit and structure. Yet on the nose it is completely ethereal – aerienne, the French might call it. Very generous. Sweet, long, with liquorice notes and even the merest suggestion of gas. Spicy with the most amazing finish. Very, very exciting – a wine that positively jumps out of the glass and says ‘kerpow’ to the palate.

Domaine Romanée Conti

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is one of the most emblematic wine estates in Burgundy and an absolute reference among the great wines of the world. Its history is intimately linked to the greatest climats of Vosne-Romanée, of which it is the exclusive or quasi-exclusive custodian. The estate notably cultivates exceptional grands crus, including Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Échézeaux, Échézeaux, as well as the celebrated Montrachet for white wines.

The Romanée-Conti, a climat classified as Grand Cru, forms the historical and symbolic heart of the estate. Owned by the domaine since the 18th century, this monopole vineyard embodies an exacting vision of wine, founded on precision, faithfulness to the terroir and extremely rigorous viticulture. The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is renowned for its constant pursuit of balance and purity of expression, favoring very low yields and meticulous vineyard work.

Emblematic vintages such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1942, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1964, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1985, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1986, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1990, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2000, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2005, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2006, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2011, illustrate the estate's ability to produce wines of remarkable depth, capable of spanning decades while maintaining an exceptional legibility of their origin. The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti thus remains an essential reference for understanding the excellence and singularity of the great wines of Burgundy.
