Information on the vintage 1988 red Bordeaux: The first of a trio of very good vintages and the penultimate vintae of a more than interesting decade. Rather like the 1986s, with which, at one time, they seemed to be level pegging, I now think that the 1988s, initially somewhat overrated, are now just about cominginto their own as serious long-term clarets.

The vineyard of Clos de l'Oratoire is located on the northeastern slope of Saint-Emilion. The terroir of Clos de l'Oratoire, made of Fronsac molasse, covering 10.32 hectares, consists of a sandy substratum and clay subsoil. The terroir of Clos de l'Oratoire is particularly suitable for Merlot (90%), Cabernet Franc (5%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) grape varieties. Merlot gives the wine roundness and opulence. Cabernet Franc provides power, aromatic complexity, and a beautiful length on the palate.
