A superlative vintage, the best since 1959. The crucial flowering period was late, which always leads to a late harvest. That and a wet September made life difficult for grapes destined to make dry white and red Bordeaux but sunny conditions at the end of September, together with a beneficial botrytis, were doubly favourable in Sauternes resulting in fine, stylish wines, the best of which are still superb.
