Jancis Robinson November - 2017
Jancis Robinson
Tobacco, blackcurrant, black olive, fantastic forest undergrowth scent on the palate with some truffle and mushroom, plus loads of fresh, well-delineated red fruit leading through to the finish. There’s a certain mustiness to this, but it’s the intriguing scent of old libraries rather than dampness.

Domaine Auguste Clape
Domaine Auguste Clape

The Auguste Clape estate is a reference in the Cornas appellation. Located in the southern part of the Rhône Valley, the red wines are 100% Syrah. Auguste Clape's Cornas wines are renowned for their straight, racy character and certain sobriety. Aged for 2 years in concrete tanks then in old foudres, these are wines built for aging. Since 1955, the Auguste Clape estate has been producing wines at the highest level, notably by adopting sustainable vineyard practices. Pierre-Marie Clape, Auguste's son who gained experience at Domaines Tempier and Le Vieux Télégraphe, has been working at the estate since 1988. He was joined in 2002 by his own son Olivier.

Only 2 cuvées are produced: Cornas with vines aged 40 to 90 years and Renaissance with younger vines.

Area: 8.8 ha; Production: 30,000 bottles/year; Average vine age: 45 years; Red grape varieties: Syrah; White grape varieties: Roussanne, Marsanne
