The wine Palate : A blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 34% Merlot, the 1996 d’Armailhac is medium to deep garnet-brick in color. It tumbles out of the glass with expressive scents of kirsch, blackcurrant jelly, crushed rocks, and sandalwood, with wafts of mossy tree bark and tobacco leaf. The medium-bodied palate offers amazingly energetic red and black berry preserve flavors, with a gently chewy texture and great tension, finishing long and lifted. Still youthful!

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
This is a great moment for Pauillac 1996, and even the slighlty lighter expressions of the appellation such as Armailhac are showing beautifully. Again we are in classic old school Cabernet territory – old books, leather armchairs, tobacco, cigar box, cured leather, wild strawberries, brambled blackberries, hedgerow, graphite, this is one to share with friends, and drink it now while it is at its height. I don’t see it ageing as long as many 1996s, so make the most of it.

Perfectly mature Bordeaux can be very satisfying and this is the stage that the d'Armaillhac is in now. Enjoy its cedarbox, violet and cassis flavors with seamless, velvety tannins in the background. Balanced, elegant and delicious now.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1996 d'Armailhac is fully mature on the nose with dark plum, briary, cloves and quite a strong violet aroma. The palate is slightly aggressive on the entry with chalky tannin. The acidity is quite pronounced here, firm in the mouth, masculine for d'Armailhac with less flesh than other vintages, although there is decent freshness and spiciness towards the finish.

Dark red tea in color, with strawberry and earthy aromas, this medium bodied Pauillac ends with green peppercorn and cherry flavors. This lighter style of Bordeaux wine is past fully mature.

Transparent ruby with a pale rim. Very pretty nose. Lightly dusty start but this bottle is richer and fruitier than the bottle of Clerc Milon 1996 served alongside. Impressively long. The best bottle of this wine I can remember tasting.

Château D'Armailhac
Château D'Armailhac

Château d'Armailhac is a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé from Pauillac whose history dates back to the 18th century, deeply linked to that of the Médoc and the Rothschild family. Long known under the names Château Mouton-d'Armailhacq, then Château Mouton-Baron-Philippe and Château Mouton-Baronne-Philippe, the estate reclaimed its historical name in 1989, asserting a distinct identity among the great wines of Pauillac.

Located on deep gravel terroirs characteristic of the appellation, the vineyard benefits from grape varieties dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This diversity allows for precise blends, faithful to the classic style of Pauillac: assertive structure, elegant tannins and aromatic expression combining black fruits, spices and cedar notes.

Under the impetus of the Rothschild family, Château d'Armailhac has experienced a remarkable rise in qualitative consistency, while maintaining an accessible positioning among the classified growths. Vintages such as Château d'Armailhac 1995, Château d'Armailhac 2000, Château d'Armailhac 2005, Château d'Armailhac 2016. illustrate the estate's ability to produce balanced, expressive wines capable of aging, sought after by lovers of great Pauillacs.
