Château Calon-Ségur is a 94 hectare wine estate located in Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde. Third classified grand cru (official classification of Medoc wines in 1855) of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, this great wine is often recognizable by its label. The Château Calon-Ségur vineyard grows on gravelly and hilly terrain. The vineyard of the estate is made up of 65% cabernet-sauvignon, 20% merlot, 15% cabernet franc with vines of 40 years of average age.
Calon-Ségur wine is generally considered to be one of the most powerful and full-bodied Saint-Estèphe wines in the appellation. The estate also produces a second wine Marquis de Calon Segur and a cru bourgeois, Capbern Gasqueton. The best vintages of Château Calon-Ségur are 1982, 1988, the 1995 vintage as well as the 1996 wines and the 2000 vintage. Finally, the 2003, 2005 vintages, 2009, 2010 and 2014 wines are excellent.

(03-2015) Tasted from an ex-château bottle at BI Wine & Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London. The 2000 Calon Segur is one of those wines that reminds you how great the millennial vintage could be. Now at fifteen years old, it has a brilliant, vivacious red berry nose infused with ash and cigar box aromas. The detail here is a beguiling and it just "sings" Saint Estèphe. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, firm tannin that provide a rigid backbone, but it is swathed in copious tobacco-drenched black fruit and a superb line of acidity. It finishes with a twist of bitter cherry on the finish that completes what is a deeply impressive Calon-Ségur; it might just outclass the 2005. Tasted March 2015.
(10-2003) Deep, lively crimson with a narrow, clear rim. Big, ripe, and even a hint of coarseness on the nose. Certainly very ripe. Big, rambunctious, almost New World ripeness. I'd mistake the nose for Napa, but there is lots of acidity and chew on the finish. Lead pencils. Very slightly short. Certainly not big in weight. Finishes a little short.
(01-2016) Dark, intense and evolved color. Nose a little discreet, but fruity. Tender, fruity mouth, with a slender body lacking a mid-palate. The finish is a bit lively. Average length.
