Jean-Marc Quarin April - 1989
Jean-Marc Quarin
Dark red color, bordeaux. Bright. Clean nose, of good intensity. Caramel. Apple. Burnt green wood! On intense swirling, a little heavier but concentrated. Very Cabernet Sauvignon. Nettle. Tobacco. Spice. Supple, soft attack. Development on a structure of straight and ascending form, concentrated with finesse. Evolves on a very beautiful tannin, stylish, woody, long and complex. Closed. Powerful. Grilled flavors in retro-olfaction. Very good. A wine more austere than Montrose.

The colour is turning a little towards brick, but remains quite deep for a wine of this age. Lovely on the nose, and very harmonious on the palate. There's still good freshness, and a good but not obtrusive underpinning of tannins. Reasonable length. Although obviously fully mature, the 88s were built to last and I don't think there's any great hurry to drink up (although nor will it improve further). If you're saving this wine for a 40th birthday in 2028, you should be in luck if it's well stored.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1988 Calon-Segur outshines both wines from the more heralded vintages of 1989 and 1990. Deeply colored, superbly balanced, rich and full bodied, it appears to be a worthy candidate for another 15-20 years of longevity. It is a classic example of this chateau's wine - cedary, very fragrant, with plenty of sweet red and black currant fruit. I should also note that it is surprisingly powerful for the vintage. It gets my nod as the finest Calon-Segur between 1982 and 1995.

Jancis Robinson December - 2001

Wonderfully deep crimson. Nose opened out in the glass. Very correct St Estèphe but with a tinge of rusty nails on the finish. Not too tannic but very, very firm. Definite mineral notes plus exceptionally ripe black fruits. This still has a way to go and has none of the awkwardness of some 1988s.

Château Calon Segur
Château Calon Segur

Château Calon-Ségur is a 94-hectare wine estate located in Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde. Third growth (1855 Official Médoc Wine Classification) of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, the grand vin is often recognizable by its label. The estate's grape varieties consist of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc with vines averaging 40 years of age. Calon-Ségur wine is generally considered one of the most powerful and full-bodied wines of the Saint-Estèphe appellation.

The estate also produces a second wine Marquis de Calon Segur and a cru bourgeois Capbern Gasqueton. The best vintages of Château Calon-Ségur are 1982, 1988, the 1995 vintage as well as the 1996 wines and the 2000 vintage. Finally, the 2003 vintage, 2005, 2009 wines, 2010 and 2014 are excellent.
