But it was also a superabundant vintage following perfect weather conditions and the wines were uniformly excellent.
The Chateau Calon-Segur is a 94 hectare vineyard located in Saint-Estephe. It is ranked third cru classé in the rankings of 1855. The vineyard grows on gravelly and hilly terrain. The vines consist of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc with vines average age of 40 years. The wine is made very traditionally, aging for on average 24 months in oak barrels, partly new (30-50% depending on the year). The wine of Calon-Segur is generally regarded as one of the most powerful and full-bodied wines of Saint-Estephe. The estate also produces a second wine called Calon Segur Marquess and the cru bourgeois Capbern Gasqueton.
