Expert's opinions

(2-1996) Branaire-Ducru has consistently been one of the finest 1975s. I have come to the conclusion that it will never resolve all of the tannin, but the wine has such a large-scaled, muscular, rich, concentrated personality that the tannin level is acceptable. There is plenty of cedar, sweet cassis fruit, vanilla, and lead pencil notes to this powerful Branaire-Ducru. The wine's deep ruby color displays some amber at the edge. I enjoyed drinking this wine young, but it has not budged in its development, continuing to display freshness, richness, and the tell-tale tannin of the vintage. It should continue to evolve and last for another 10-15+ years.

Château Branaire Ducru
Château Branaire Ducru

Château Branaire Ducru is a fourth growth classified (official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification) from the Saint-Julien appellation in Médoc. The vineyard covers nearly 60 hectares of vines. Château Branaire-Ducru is now one of the jewels of Saint Julien. It is highly sought after for its very pure red fruit. Its typical composition, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, opens with bright aromas of raspberry and blackberry, before becoming more complex on the palate with delicate nuances of mineral, pencil lead, smoke and spring flowers... The Château also produces a second wine: Duluc de Branaire Ducru.

The best vintages of Château Branaire Ducru are 1975, 1982 grand cru wines, 1989, the 1995 vintage and the 1996 vintage. The wines from 2000, 2001, 2003 vintage and 2005 are also exceptional. Finally, the grand crus from 2009, 2010 vintage and the 2015 vintage are great vintages.
