Weather conditions led to very different results depending on the region, grape variety, and harvest date. In Bordeaux, September rainfall complicated the ripening of red grapes, while helping to create favorable conditions for the great sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac. In Burgundy, white wines were generally more successful than reds. The Rhône Valley also experienced an interesting year, with very different wine profiles between Côte-Rôtie and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Nearly sixty years after the harvest, however, a 1967 wine must be assessed on a bottle-by-bottle basis. The reputation of the estate and appellation matters, but the bottle’s provenance, fill level, cork condition, and storage conditions now play an essential role.

The 1967 Vintage in Bordeaux

In Bordeaux, the year had initially begun under favorable conditions. After a relatively mild winter and slightly delayed flowering, July and August were hot and dry. However, the situation changed significantly in September. The first three weeks of the month were cold and wet, before sunnier weather returned towards the end of September. The red grape harvest, which began in October, was then disrupted by several periods of rainfall.

These conditions explain the rather inconsistent quality of 1967 Bordeaux wines. In the Médoc and Graves, the wines were generally less concentrated than those from vintages such as 1966. Many evolved quickly and have now reached an advanced stage of maturity. Nevertheless, the best bottles can still retain the distinctive aromatic complexity of aged Bordeaux wines, with notes of leather, tobacco, forest floor, cedar, and dried fruit.

The Right Bank fared better. In Pomerol, where Merlot plays a prominent role, the results were more consistent. Decanter even considers Pomerol to be the Bordeaux appellation that produced the most convincing red wines of the year. Petrus is notably cited among the great successes of the vintage, alongside Trotanoy and Vieux Château Certan. In Saint-Émilion, some wines from the slopes and plateau have also stood the test of time particularly well. For enthusiasts of mature wines, a 1967 Bordeaux should therefore not be selected based on the vintage alone. The appellation, château, and above all, the condition and storage history of each bottle are decisive factors.

Sauternes and Barsac: Bordeaux’s Greatest Success of the 1967 Vintage

The character of the 1967 Bordeaux vintage changes completely when moving from red wines to sweet wines. In Sauternes and Barsac, the conditions that had negatively affected some of the red wines instead favored the production of rich, concentrated sweet wines. September rainfall provided the humidity needed for the development of Botrytis cinerea, the fungus responsible for noble rot. The return of sunshine towards the end of the month then allowed the grapes to develop even greater concentration. Harvesting in Sauternes began as early as late September, and the estates able to wait and carry out several selective harvesting passes achieved the best results. Decanter awarded the 1967 vintage its highest rating for Sauternes and Barsac in its vintage guide.

Château d’Yquem 1967 is one of the benchmark wines of this vintage. At the estate, the first selective harvesting pass took place between September 26 and October 3, before harvesting resumed on October 9. High temperatures and warm nights encouraged particularly effective noble rot development. The harvest ended on October 26, with exceptionally ripe and concentrated grapes. Other 1967 Sauternes wines also illustrate the success of the vintage, including Château Suduiraut, Château Gilette, Château Rabaud-Promis, and Château Caillou in Barsac. Over time, these wines can develop aromas of honey, candied apricot, orange peel, dried fruit, caramel, and spices. Their sugar content, combined with their acidity, has often allowed them to age more gracefully over the decades than red wines from the same vintage.

CHÂTEAU GILETTE Crème de tête 1967

1967 Burgundy Wines

In Burgundy, the 1967 vintage followed 1966 and generally produced lighter wines. A severe frost in early May reduced yields. July and August were then very hot, encouraging grape development, before a period of rainfall lasting around ten days in September. Fine weather returned before the start of the harvest, which was scheduled for October 2.

Chardonnay coped better with these conditions than Pinot Noir. 1967 white Burgundy wines were therefore considered more consistent in quality than the reds. They originally displayed a delicate and balanced character, although it is now extremely rare to find a bottle still at its optimal drinking stage. Among the red wines, quality was more variable. The most successful examples were distinguished more by their finesse and elegance than by their power.

Volnay is notably mentioned among the red wine appellations that achieved interesting results. The prestigious white wine appellations of the Côte de Beaune also provide valuable insight into the vintage. Nearly sixty years later, however, the appeal of a 1967 Burgundy wine depends primarily on the quality of the producer, the terroir, and the bottle’s storage conditions.

The 1967 Vintage in the Rhône Valley

The Rhône Valley enjoyed more favorable conditions in 1967, particularly for certain red wines. However, results varied considerably between the northern and southern parts of the region. In Côte-Rôtie, the wines were generally light and approachable in their youth. By contrast, 1967 Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines stood out for their much more pronounced tannic structure. Their fruit concentration and depth allowed the finest cuvées to withstand extended ageing. Decanter therefore considers 1967 a successful year for Rhône red wines, awarding the vintage a rating of four out of five. The vintage also produced some interesting white wines from Condrieu.

After several decades of ageing, great Rhône red wines can develop tertiary aromas of leather, spices, dried herbs, mature dark fruit, and forest floor. As with all older vintages, these characteristics remain highly dependent on the condition of each bottle. A perfectly preserved Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, or 1967 Châteauneuf-du-Pape will not evolve in the same way as a wine that has been exposed to temperature fluctuations or prolonged storage under poor conditions.

1967 Champagnes

The 1967 vintage in Champagne remains much less prominent. It was not a vintage widely declared by Champagne houses. Difficult growing conditions in the vineyards and the presence of grey rot led to a large proportion of the grapes being used in blends rather than vintage Champagnes.

Champagnes from the 1967 vintage are therefore relatively rare. At this age, their appeal depends heavily on how well they have been stored. When a bottle has aged gracefully, its character can be very different from that of a young Champagne. Fresh aromas gradually give way to notes of dried fruit, brioche, toast, honey, and sometimes forest floor. For a 1967 Champagne, the condition of the bottle must be examined with particular care. The fill level, the condition of the cork and capsule, and the storage conditions all provide important indications of how well the wine may have stood the test of time.

Can You Still Drink a 1967 Wine Today?

A 1967 wine is now approaching sixty years of age. At this stage, it is no longer possible to assess a bottle solely on the overall reputation of the vintage. Two bottles from the same château and the same year can show very different signs of ageing.

The fill level of the wine in the bottle is a first indicator of its condition. The state of the capsule, the absence of signs of leakage, the wine’s color, and the condition of the label also provide useful information. Provenance and storage conditions are particularly important for older vintages. Sweet wines from Sauternes and Barsac are among the 1967 wines offering the most promising drinking potential. Some great red wines from Pomerol, the Rhône Valley, or Burgundy can also provide memorable tasting experiences when they have been perfectly preserved. Nevertheless, each mature bottle should be assessed individually.

Before opening, it is generally advisable to let the bottle rest upright so that any sediment can settle at the bottom. The cork should then be removed carefully, as it may have become fragile after several decades of ageing. For an old red wine, prolonged decanting is not always recommended, as excessive exposure to air can accelerate its evolution. It is often preferable to observe how the wine develops directly in the glass.

<div class="wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex
