The 1977 vintage<\/strong><\/a> holds a distinctive place in recent wine history. In France, the year was generally marked by a difficult growing season, with spring frost in some regions, a summer that was often cool and wet, and slow ripening. The return of more favourable weather in September helped save part of the harvest, but came too late to fully offset the season\u2019s challenges. Nearly half a century after the harvest, choosing a 1977 wine therefore requires looking beyond the vintage\u2019s overall reputation. The bottle\u2019s provenance, storage conditions and wine style are now decisive factors.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bordeaux 1977: A Difficult Vintage Partly Saved by September<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 1977 Bordeaux vintage<\/strong><\/a> faced difficult conditions from the spring onward. Severe frosts hit the vineyards at the end of March, and some estates lost a significant share of their crop. Merlot was particularly affected in several areas. The spring remained cool, and flowering took place late. July and August then brought heavy rainfall. As a result, vine development was slow and ripening remained uneven. September marked a change in conditions. The weather became drier, warmer and sunnier, allowing the grapes to gain maturity. In the M\u00e9doc, harvesting often began in early October. This late improvement was not enough to produce highly concentrated wines. 1977 Bordeaux red wines<\/strong> generally show a light structure and pronounced acidity. Some ch\u00e2teaux nevertheless achieved more balanced results thanks to low yields and rigorous selection.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ch\u00e2teau Latour<\/strong><\/a> 1977<\/strong>, for example, shows a supple and relatively soft profile. The Ch\u00e2teau Margaux<\/strong><\/a> 1977<\/strong> also benefited from low yields, giving it greater concentration than many other wines from the vintage. Other references such as La Mission Haut-Brion<\/strong><\/a> 1977<\/strong>, Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande<\/strong><\/a> 1977<\/strong>, and L\u00e9oville Las Cases<\/strong><\/a> 1977<\/strong> may still appeal to lovers of old Bordeaux. Their interest lies mainly in their evolution and rarity. They do not offer the depth of Bordeaux\u2019s great vintages of the decade. On the Right Bank, the picture was equally challenging. Merlot had suffered from the frost. Yields were low and the wines often lacked body. Pomerol 1977<\/strong><\/a> and Saint-\u00c9milion 1977<\/strong><\/a> therefore require careful selection.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burgundy Wines 1977: An Uneven Vintage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 1977 Burgundy vintage<\/strong><\/a> is probably one of the regions where assessing the vintage requires the greatest nuance. Rainfall was frequent in July, the beginning of August brought more favourable conditions before storms returned at the end of the month, and September finally brought sunshine. The harvest was late: in the C\u00f4te de Nuits, picking is documented as having begun around 1 October. Historical assessments are, however, less consistent than in Bordeaux. Some evaluations consider 1977 a mediocre year for red wines, while others highlight the gains in ripeness achieved in September and describe relatively harmonious wines from estates that harvested at the right time. This divergence mainly reflects the considerable variation in results.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1977 red Burgundy wines<\/strong>, made from Pinot Noir, are generally less concentrated than those from the great vintages. After several decades, bottles that remain well balanced can develop a tertiary profile dominated by dried fruit, undergrowth, spices, leather and earthy notes. Appellations such as Chambolle-Musigny<\/strong><\/a>, Gevrey-Chambertin<\/strong><\/a>, Nuits-Saint-Georges<\/strong><\/a>, and Pommard<\/strong><\/a> can still yield bottles from this year, but their state of preservation is now a decisive factor.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

White wines offer another perspective on the vintage. The naturally high acidity of a cool growing season sometimes gave certain bottles from Meursault<\/strong><\/a>, Puligny-Montrachet, or Chassagne-Montrachet<\/strong> greater longevity. Here again, it would be an overstatement to consider 1977 a great vintage for white Burgundy, but some wines from fine terroirs and stored under rigorous conditions can still offer genuine interest today.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even historic estates such as Domaine de la Roman\u00e9e-Conti<\/strong><\/a> produced their grands crus in 1977. Their rarity and collectible value should not, however, be confused with the intrinsic quality of the vintage: retrospective assessments remain clearly below those of the great Burgundy vintages from the surrounding years.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rh\u00f4ne Valley 1977: Limited Concentration in the Red Wines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the Rh\u00f4ne Valley<\/strong><\/a>, 1977 was also a difficult year. The summer remained cool, and ripening progressed slowly. September brought warmer and drier weather, but the improvement was fragile. In the Northern Rh\u00f4ne, Syrah sometimes struggled to reach full ripeness. C\u00f4te-R\u00f4tie 1977<\/strong><\/a> and Hermitage 1977<\/strong><\/a> therefore show highly variable results. The red wines are often lightly coloured and lack concentration.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few bottles from major producers have nevertheless stood the test of time. Hermitage La Chapelle 1977 from Paul Jaboulet A\u00een\u00e9<\/a><\/strong>, as well as Hermitage wines from Jean-Louis Chave<\/strong><\/a> or Chapoutier<\/strong><\/a>, remain among the references still sought after today. In the Southern Rh\u00f4ne, Ch\u00e2teauneuf-du-Pape 1977<\/strong><\/a> often shows a lighter profile than wines from the great vintages. Bottles from Henri Bonneau<\/strong><\/a> or Vieille Julienne<\/strong><\/a> can still be found. Here again, storage conditions play a decisive role.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Champagne 1977: A Particularly Late Harvest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 1977 vintage in Champagne<\/a><\/strong> experienced cool and wet conditions. The grapes ripened slowly, and the harvest began particularly late, in early October. This limited ripeness led many houses not to declare a vintage Champagne. The base wines retained high acidity but often lacked richness.<\/p>

A few houses nevertheless produced 1977 cuv\u00e9es. Maison Henriot\u2019s Cuv\u00e9e des Enchanteleurs 1977<\/strong> is one example, showing that rigorous selection could still produce an interesting result despite the year\u2019s difficulties. A 1977 Champagne<\/strong> is now a rare bottle. Its appeal depends greatly on the quality of the cork, the remaining pressure, and the conditions in which it has been stored.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Taste a 1977 Wine Today?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A 1977 wine<\/strong> is now approaching half a century in age. Its condition depends above all on how it has been stored since bottling. The first thing to check is the wine level. A slight drop is normal in an old bottle, while a very low level may indicate significant evaporation.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The condition of the capsule also provides useful information. It is important to check for any signs of leakage. The colour of the wine and the condition of the cork can also help assess the bottle. Before opening, it is best to leave the wine standing upright so that any sediment can settle at the bottom of the bottle. Opening the bottle then requires great care, as old corks often become fragile. Prolonged decanting can also tire an old red wine. It is generally better to follow its evolution directly in the glass.\r\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Bordeaux or Burgundy from 1977 that is still showing well will no longer display much fresh fruit. Instead, it may develop notes of leather, tobacco, undergrowth, dried leaves, spices, or dried fruit. Sweet wines, fortified wines, and Ports often age more successfully over time. They can offer aromas of candied fruit, caramel, coffee, cocoa, nuts, and spices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
