Among the prestigious estates of Bordeaux, Château Montrose holds a singular position. Located in the heart of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, this Second Growth embodies the power, longevity, and nobility of the great red wines of the Médoc. Renowned for the exceptional consistency of its wines and the precision of its terroir, Montrose stands among the most respected estates in Bordeaux. Through its level of excellence, it now rivals the greatest names of the 1855 Classification.

From Modernization to Excellence: The Legacy of Great Families

The history of Château Montrose begins at the end of the 18th century, when its land still belonged to the Calon estate. In 1815, Théodore Dumoulin revealed the potential of this Saint-Estèphe terroir by planting vines and building the château. He named it Montrose in reference to the pink heather that once covered the site. After his passing, the estate underwent its first major modernization under the leadership of Mathieu Dollfus starting in 1866. In 1896, Château Montrose came into the hands of the Charmolüe family, who managed it for three generations. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, Montrose entered a new era in 2006 with the arrival of the Bouygues family. Significant investments were then made to enhance both the terroir and the wines. Since 2022, Charlotte Bouygues and Pierre Graffeuille have continued this pursuit of excellence.

« The past deserves great respect. We embrace modernity when it benefits the quality of the wine and the environment, but we always honor our history. » – Martin Bouygues

An Exceptional Terroir at the Heart of the Saint-Estèphe Appellation

Château Montrose enjoys a privileged location, directly bordering the Gironde estuary. This unique terroir, composed mainly of deep gravel mixed with clay-sandy subsoils, provides remarkable natural drainage and ideal thermal regulation. The influence of the estuary plays a decisive role, protecting the vines from climatic extremes and promoting slow, even ripening of the grapes. This rare combination gives Montrose wines their powerful structure, natural freshness, and exceptional aging potential. Cabernet Sauvignon finds a particularly noble expression here, supported by Merlot and, more discreetly, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The Style of Château Montrose Wines: Between Power and Precision

The great red wines of Château Montrose are renowned for their impressive structure and extraordinary longevity. On the palate, they reveal a dense and profound framework, supported by fine yet firm tannins, well-controlled acidity, and remarkable aromatic purity. Notes of black fruit, cedar, graphite, and spice gradually evolve over time into more complex nuances, characteristic of Bordeaux’s great age-worthy wines. Long regarded as austere in their youth, Montrose wines now stand out for a more immediate balance, the result of precise parcel-by-parcel work and winemaking practices that are ever more respectful of both fruit and terroir.

100/100 : “The wine is remarkably rich, with a distinctive nose of sweet, jammy fruits, liquid minerals, new saddle leather, and grilled steak. It is a massive, full-bodied, prodigiously endowed wine that remains relatively accessible, as it has not yet begun to close down and lose its youthful richness.”

The Second Wine of Montrose: A Complementary Expression of the Estate

Château Montrose also produces a renowned second wine, La Dame de Montrose. Sourced from specific parcels or younger vines, this wine faithfully reflects the estate’s identity while offering a more approachable style. La Dame de Montrose charms with its vibrant fruit, supple texture, and elegance, while retaining the signature of Saint-Estèphe and the seriousness of a prestigious Bordeaux château. It represents an ideal introduction to the world of Montrose, with appreciable aging potential and a style that is already highly expressive.

Vinification and Aging at Château Montrose: Excellence in the Service of Great Bordeaux Wines

At Château Montrose, the creation of great red wines is rooted in a philosophy of total precision, from vineyard to cellar. The work begins in the vineyard according to a carefully structured annual cycle, where each season plays a decisive role in expressing the terroir of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Winter sustainably prepares the vines through pruning tailored to each individual plant. Spring supports growth and careful canopy management. Summer guides the grapes toward optimal ripeness through measured and thoughtful practices. Finally, autumn brings manual harvests conducted parcel by parcel, guided by daily berry tastings. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes undergo extremely rigorous sorting, combining manual selection and optical sorting, before parcel-by-parcel vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, designed to preserve the identity of each lot and reveal the full typicity of the terroir.

Carefully controlled macerations, meticulous press selection, and blends crafted as early as winter make it possible to produce wines that are precise, balanced, and faithful to the Montrose style. Aging in barrels, conducted with great care according to the personality of each wine, relies on traditional methods such as racking by “esquive” and fining with egg whites, in order to refine the texture and ensure the longevity of this Second Growth, now recognized among the most prestigious châteaux of Bordeaux.
