The Angelus vineyard is at the heart of a natural amphitheater, dominated by the three churches of Saint Emilion. Here, the bells rang the Angelus in the morning, at noon and in the evening. They marked the rhythm of the working day in the vineyards and villages. This is where men and women stopped working to meditate for a few moments.

l'Angelus de Jean François Millet

Jean François Millet painted the Angelus, currently on display at the Musée d’Orsay.

The bell on the label of the Château Angelus bottle symbolises this origin and this moment of contemplation. Angelus is the work of a passion written for eight generations by the Boüard de Laforest family.

In 1954, during the first classification of Saint Emilion, Château Angelus was classified as a Grand Cru Classé. It already had a strong reputation that helped it to calmly pass the Bordeaux wine crisis in 1973. They also displayed the oenological revival in 1980.

The vineyard concentrates hot summer temperatures. The soil is naturally drained by the slope. This good distribution between limestone and clay allows a regular supply of water and minerals. The rootstocks are ideally adapted to the terroir and the grape varieties distributed according to the soils: Merlot on the coast and Cabernet Franc in high proportion on the clay-limestone soils at the foot of the slope.

Legendary vintages of the château are the years when the generosity of nature combined with human expertise provide the greatest taste sensations.

The second label

The Carillon de l’Angélus was born with the 1987 vintage. Reflecting the level of demand of the estate’s teams, it comes from a variable percentage of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon selected from different terroirs of Saint Emilion. Its style is composed by vinification and aging. The appreciation of the wine goes through the purity of its fruit aromas, its velvety tannins and its elegant finish.
