In 1855, on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of Paris, Napoleon III asked for a classification of Bordeaux wines.
A first ranking was then established on the basis of the notoriety of the wines and their price on the market. Only two changes were made to the original list. The first took place the same year with the addition of the Château Cantemerle as fifth cru. The last was in 1973, the castle Mouton Rothschild then passes from the rank of second to premier cru.
Unlike the Saint Emilion classification, the 1855 classification remains unchanged (except for the last modification).
The ranking is organized in two parts with red wines (60 crus from Médoc et 1 from Graves) and on the other the sweet white (27 crus from Sauternes and Barsac)
