Tom Cannavan January - 2005

Moderately deep and very vibrant crimson. There's a depth and solidity here, with hints of chocolate and espresso bean, and a warming core of autumnal berry fruits and spices. Very harmonious palate; the texture is quite silky, and there's a sweet depth of fruit with cherry and deeper, juicy plum notes. Tannins here are fine and well-controlled, with a polished quality though plenty of grippy power. Acidity seems quite gentle, but it is sufficient and balances well with re-emerging coffee and toasty oak and spice in the finish.

Yes, there is a huge amount of new wood here. It tastes highly toasty, making wood tannins the only ones at present. But there is something more that comes from the almost hidden layer of perfumed fruit. Give this wine the benefit of the doubt—Beychevelle is performing well at the moment.

Leafy, pine, cedar chest, forest, lead pencil and black cherry aromas create the perfume. Blackberry and cassis on the palate, with firm tannins and a strict, spicy, cassis and herbal finish.

Real interest and excitement. Difficult to spit this one out! Sweet start but overall juicy and appetising and not tarty. Second favourite of the group, after Gruaud.

Château Beychevelle
Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle is a fourth classified grand cru (classification of Medoc wines of 1855) of the Saint-Julien appellation. Located on the left bank of the Médoc, the vineyard includes 92 hectares of vines. The vines are around 30 years old and benefit from reasoned treatment. Château Beychevelle is a classic Saint-Julien: roundness, rich aromas, and power. The classic harmony of the greatest Médoc, which deserves much more than the fourth cru of the 1855 classification.

The best vintages of Beychevelle are undoubtedly 1982 and the vintage 1986. The wines of 1989, 2000 and grands crus of 2005 are equally exceptional. Finally, Château Beychevelle has also produced great vintages such as 2009, 2010 and the 2015 vintage.
