Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
(01-1997) When I tasted the 1993 Beaucastel in Chateauneuf du Pape, the wine was far more showy, flashy, and open-knit than bottles tasted stateside, admittedly right after reaching these shores. I backed off my initial high rating a bit and added the question mark because of how tannic, backward, and firm the wine showed on two separate occasions from a case I purchased. It certainly possesses a dense color, as well as plenty of body and intensity. However, the rich, sweet, open-knit bouquet has gone into hibernation, leaving a tightly knit wine that is frozen in place, reluctantly offering up aromas of black fruits and smoke. Tannic, austere, and more in step with the 1988, this appears to be a vintage that will require more initial cellaring than I had anticipated. It will be interesting to retaste this wine after it has had 4-6 months of rest on these shores.

(10-2012) Barnyard, olive, vegatal, cherry and earthy notes, medium bodied and a spicy, black cherry and stone finish are found in this fully mature wine. I'd drink this much sooner than later.

Château de Beaucastel

Château de Beaucastel

The château of Beaucastel is an estate located in Courthezon, a town near Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Vaucluse department. The château is a benchmark in Rhône wines. The château of Beaucastel extends over more than 130 hectares of vines. Three quarters are grown under the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation and the rest is grown under the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation.

In the respect of winegrowing traditions, the castle carries out its harvest exclusively by hand. The grapes are carefully sorted on arrival at the cellar, only the finest grapes will be vinified. All the grape varieties are cuvées separately, each one having its own character, its aromas: Grenache and Cinsault give warmth, color and mellowness, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Muscardin and Vaccarèse: solidity, longevity and a very frank taste. finally Counoise and Picpoul for freshness, and bouquets of particular aromas.

The meticulous work of the Perrin family is different each year and determines the quality, originality and specificity of each vintage. This marriage is the culmination of months of effort, care, loving attention at all times. It is the expression of a terroir in a specific year.
