Expert's opinions

(1-1998) The aromas of ripe pineapples and fresh melons are quite apparent in this medium-weight wine with a lush, nicely concentrated personality. Not as good as the 1982 or 1983, this is still a notable effort from what is Sauternes's best priced estate-bottled wine.

Château Bastor Lamontagne
Until 1710, the estate Bastor Lamontagne was the property of the King of France, successor in Guyenne of the King of England, whose properties had fallen into the hands of the King of France. In 1711, the castle was bought by Vincent de la Montaigne, Counsellor at the Parliament of Bordeaux. It was however the Larrieu family who put the Bastor La Montaigne on the map. In 1936, it was sold to Crédit Foncier de France. Only wines from the best vintages are bottled, from the best terroirs and the most selective sorting process. The wines of Bastor Lamontagne show the harmony of the great Sauternes: nervous, they often have a floral bouquet mingling with flavors of honey and acacia. With their power and complexity, they are  ideal wines for storing away. In the mouth their balance is remarkable and the concentration is well supported by an aromatic freshness.
