Wine Spectator June - 1989
Wine Spectator
Beautifully crafted, with tightly focused, refined aromas and flavors of cherry, currant, cedar and toast, firmly supported with soft tannins; turns pretty and ripe on the finish. With its concentration, a safe bet to age.

Jean-Marc Quarin June - 2001
Jean-Marc Quarin
Dark red color. Medium intensity. Evolved. Nose of medium intensity. Animal. Note of tobacco. The fresh fruit has gone. On swirling evokes Merlot. Delicate entry on the palate, developing on a fruity and elegant structure of straight form. The texture is distinguished, but the body is lacking. Its mellow character makes it charming and quite ready to drink. It retains a lovely fine aromatic persistence on the finish. Goes down easily. Drink now.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
I recall this being superior five years ago. Here, I am not particularly taken by the 1986. It has a rather aloof character, little in the way of fruite with touches of mint and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of mushroom on the entry: masculine and tannic, the Cabernet Franc dominant with a rather foursquare, cedar and sous-bois finish that needs more joie-de-vivre.
First year of second label. Big revolution! Very dark. Some decay. Treacle and dust. With a hint of violets. Definitely drying out. Old wine but not without charm.

Château Angelus
Château Angelus

Château Angelus was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A de Saint-Emilion in 2012 (previously it had been 1er Grand Cru Classé B since 1954). It shares the top of the Saint-Emilion wine classification with Châteaux Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Pavie.

The vineyard of Château Angelus is located on the hillside foot, a steep south-facing slope. The clay-limestone soil rests on a limestone base. The grape varieties consist of approximately 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. In certain years such as 2003, the proportion of Cabernet Franc even exceeds that of Merlot! The wine matures for 18 to 22 months in new barrels. Since 2018, Château Angelus has been initiating its conversion to organic farming, which should be completed in 2023.

The greatest vintages of the château are Angelus 1988, Angelus 1989, Angelus 1990, Angelus 1993, Angelus 1994, Angelus 2000 and Angelus 2001.
