Information on the vintage 1962 red Bordeaux : Thoroughly upstaged by the quality, the sheer bravado of the preceding year. But because the 1961 vintage was very small and, in the light of the times, very expensive, the abundant crop of the very good 1962 following a satisfactory growing season, proved useful. I have always liked this now somewhat underrated and largely overlooked vintage.

From a bottle that apparently laid down in the same cellar for over 50 years. Cloudy robe showing its age. The nose was at first diplaying aromas of mushrooms, wet earth, hay, and after opening up much more charming notes of faded rose, orange peel, cherry, truffle and spices. Lovely mouthfeel, very elegant with a nice acidity and gentle tanins. Good structure, balance, complexity and elegance.

Château Angelus
Château Angelus

Château Angelus was promoted Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Emilion in 2012 (previously it was 1st Grand Cru Classé B since 1954). He shares the head of the Saint Emilion wine classification with Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Pavie.

The vineyard of Château Angelus is located on the foot of coast, a steep hillside facing south. The clay-limestone soil rests on a calcareous base. The grape variety is composed of about 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. In some years as in 2003, the share of Cabernet Franc even exceeds that of Merlot! Mature wine 18 to 22 months in new barrels. Since 2018, the castle Angelus initiates its conversion to Bio which should be completed in 2023.

The greatest vintages of Château Angelus are 1988, the 1989 vintage wines, 1990, 1993, 1994.
