Romanée Saint Vivant appellation

Romanée Saint Vivant has been a French appellation of origin (AOC) since 1936. The Romanée Saint Vivant appellation is above all a Grand Cru of Burgundy, produced by the estates: Arnoux-Lachaux, the famous Domaine de la Romanée Conti or even the André Cathiard estate.

With more than 9.3 hectares of vines, the appellation produces only Pinot Noir. The wines offer aromas of roses and cherries. This wine with a fine and delicate texture is considered to be the most ‘feminine‘ of the Grands Crus of Vosne.The aging potential of a bottle of Romanée Saint Vivant is 10 to 20 years, up to 50 years for the greatest vintages.

The 1943, 1952, 1954, 1985 and 1988 vintages are very great vintages in the Romanée Saint Vivant appellation. The 1953 wines, 1961 and 1962 grands crus as well as the 1989 and 1996 vintage are excellent. The appellation also includes exceptional vintages such as 1945, 1969 and the 2001 vintage. Finally, the best vintages of the appellation are unquestionably 1929, 1947, the 1959 vintage, 1971 wines and the 2005 vintage.

Founded by the Saint-Vivant monastery, the vineyard is located east of Richebourg and just below Romanée Conti. This monastery, a ruin of such great wealth, became famous when at the end of the 18th century the Prince de Conti stopped marketing his Romanesque and reserved the benefits for himself.

The ruins of the old abbey were bought in order to be restored by the Domaine de la Romanée Conti: the appellation‘s largest producer.
