2012 Vintage wine

Our opinion on the 2012 vintage: a great success for Champagne

The 2012 Bordeaux vintage was small and challenging, but with moments of greatness. A rainy spring delayed flowering, while a hot, dry summer followed. Yields fell slightly and wines were of mixed quality. The whites were generally very good, especially those from Pessac-Léognan, Graves and Entre-deux-Mers.

Sauternes suffered the most from the bad weather. The growing season was unpredictable, with wet conditions in the spring and dry heat in the summer. The famous Château d‘Yquem did not even produce any wine for this vintage.

The 2012 Burgundy vintage, despite some challenges, produced some fantastic wines. Despite a wet spring with frosts and attacks of mildew, some wines shone. The whites, fresh and expressive, offered remarkable examples of Chablis. The reds, although concentrated, showed seductive qualities. The best wines come from the Côte d‘Or and the Côte Chalonnaise.

The 2012 vintage for the Rhône Valley was difficult at times, but some good wines were made. We are talking about a late vintage, indeed, an exceptionally wet spring and threats of diseases, the hot and dry summer allowed a successful maturation. The wines display a refined character with good balancing acidity and fine tannins, offering a structure conducive to ageing.

The 2012 vintage for Champagne was excellent despite challenges during the growing season. A wet spring with frost and hailstorms affected yields, but an incredible August changed that. The grapes were able to fully ripen, producing wines of great depth, complexity and aromatic flavor with balanced acidity. This vintage has been widely regarded as one of Champagne‘s finest for decades, and wines from the best estates are likely to drink superbly now.

Our advice for buying a 2012 wine

In Bordeaux, we recommend the appellations of Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Margaux, which have all been excellent. The best examples present a balanced and refined structure with a clear and concentrated fruit.

In Burgundy, the 2012 red wines are better on the Côte de Nuit side. The Domaine Dugat-Py particularly stood out with the Dugat-Py Vieilles Vignes 2012 in Chambertin Grand Cru.

In the Rhône Valley, the best reds come from vineyards on the high hillsides of the northern Rhône, while Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône has produced good fruity and refreshing wines.

In Champagne, the red varieties, such as Pinot Noir and Meunier, were able to fully ripen and the Chardonnay was both rich and round while retaining the necessary acidity.
