Our opinion on the 2011 vintage: a contrasting but satisfying vintage

The 2011 vintage of Bordeaux was generally satisfactory, although in comparison to the brilliant 2010 and 2009. The 2011 vintage suffered from capricious weather with a dry winter and a very hot spring. This results in an early harvest with lower yields.

As for Sauternes, the 2011 vintage was extremely good. The growing season was ideal, with perfect conditions for noble rot. The wines are intense, refined and aromatic, advocating elegance over opulence.

In Burgundy, the 2011 vintage is good overall. Marked by drought, producers had to adapt in order to save the harvest. The Richebourg and Romanée-Saint-Vivant appellations still offer very great wines.

Taking advantage of sunshine during the months of September and October, most of the Rhône wines of 2011 are good and of medium aging. Although the classic southern Rhône appellations have not reached their usual potential, some interesting wines have been made, particularly in the northern Rhône.

The 2011 champagnes are considered to be very successful and perfectly balanced. We are talking about a very good vintage.

  

Our advice for buying a 2011 wine

In Bordeaux, some red wines managed to reveal rich tannins with a slight acidity, while the best whites were rich with a nice balanced acidity.

The 2011 Sauternes are excellent and keep well.

In Burgundy, we recommend the Chablis, Mâconnais and Côte de Beaune Meursault whites, which are particularly successful. The 2011 reds are rather light this year.

Regarding the Rhône Valley, the reds, in particular the Syrah, did well with pure fruit and an elegant structure.
