Our opinion on the 2003 vintage: a hot year for an excellent vintage

In Bordeaux, the quality of the 2003 vintage is very good despite the extremely hot weather conditions. A few rains in September helped to relieve the vineyard. Bordeaux 2003 wines are good and balanced, they will be of good guard.

This vintage was a source of contention. Indeed, Château Pavie 2003 provoked a conflict between Jancis Robinson and Robert Parker, two famous experts in wine criticism. Robinson called this wine “ridiculous”, “unappetizing”, and “too ripe”, which Parker was quick to refute.

In Sauternes, the vintage is exceptional. This hot year allowed to harvest berries intensely concentrated in sugar. Then, added to this were the September rains which stimulated the botrytis cinerea, essential in the development of the Sauternes. The wines are endowed with a richness never seen since the 1989 and 1990 vintages.

In Burgundy, the 2003 wines are just as successful. Also affected by hot temperatures during the summer, the harvest was early and considerably reduced. In particular, the grapes had a low degree of acidity, but the talent producers were able to work with care to develop great wines. As a result, the best wineries have produced excellent and fruity wines, but quantities are very limited because of the low harvest.

In the Rhone Valley, the strong heat helped to make up for the late break and make this 2003 vintage a very good quality. Rhône wines are rich, structured and opulent.

   

Our advice for buying a 2003 wine

In Bordeaux, the best appellations of this vintage are Pauillac, Saint Estèphe and Pessac Léognan. In addition, Château Margaux, Figeac, Ausone and Angelus managed to produce a phenomenal vintage despite the difficulties encountered.

In Burgundy, 2003 red wines are rich and opulent. White sides, some will be less of a wine to keep, because they may lack acidity.

In the Rhone Valley, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cornas and Hermitage appellations offer great wines. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, several notable successes.
