1985 Vintage wine

1985 Vintage wine

Our opinion on the 1985 vintage : an exceptional vintage in all regions

The 1985 vintage was a year full of twists and turns in Bordeaux. The winegrowers were worried about the freezing temperatures of the winter (-14°C), but they were reassured by the hot weather in September, which greatly benefited the grapes. The red wines produced that year are of exceptional quality, with rich and complex aromas. On the other hand, the quality of the Sauternes wines was rather average because of the lack of humidity for the development of botrytis. Despite this, the 1985 vintage in Bordeaux was successful overall and produced high quality red wines.

In Burgundy too, the 1985 vintage was marked by favorable weather conditions, allowing the production of great wines. The red wines of 1985 are rich and offer pronounced fruit aromas and are very pleasant to drink now, while having great ageing potential. The 1985 whites are also remarkable, with their complexity, flavor and suppleness. They have reached maturity and can be enjoyed now.

In the Rhone Valley, we also speak of a very successful vintage. Indeed, the wines are very powerful, very rich in taste, but they will keep a certain tenderness, a very seductive sweetness. The 1985 vintage is a reference vintage for the wines of the Rhone Valley, and even more so for the CĂ´te-RĂ´tie appellation. In the Hermitage appellation, the wines are more supple than in CĂ´te RĂ´tie, but they do not have the same acidity, which will give them a lack of volume in the middle and end of the mouth.

The 1985 Champagnes are attractive and interesting. Although yields were limited, the grapes were perfectly ripe and well swollen, resulting in perfectly balanced, elegant and fruity Champagnes with good acidity. According to the cellar master Alain Terrier, the 1985 Laurent Perrier is one of the best of this century.

Our advice for buying a 1985 wine

In Bordeaux, Margaux, Pauillac and Saint Estèphe have produced wines of superior quality.

In Burgundy, we recommend the Latricières-Chambertin and Musigny appellations for red wines, and Pessac Leognan for white wines.

In the Rhone Valley, the wines from the northern part are long-lived, while those from the southern side are supple, rich and concentrated.

In Champagne, the Chardonnays are expressive and the Pinot Noirs are more robust.
