In Bordeaux, the harvests were abundant and the quality was high. Favored by a hot summer that led to over-ripening of the grapes, the châteaux were able to produce very pleasant, fruity and well-balanced wines. The Sauternes are remarkable. Smooth and honeyed, the châteaux of Yquem 1983, Climens 1983, Fargues 1983 and Gilette 1983 offer great wines.
The wines of Burgundy have found a balance with age despite difficult weather conditions. The appellations Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny experienced violent hail storms which destroyed part of the harvest and could have weakened the quality of the wines. Fortunately, in June, warm and dry conditions were maintained, allowing a successful flowering.

This was not the case for Gevrey-Chambertin, where wet conditions caused rot but enough grapes were saved. The red Burgundies are fruity and have those aromas so characteristic of pinot noir. As for the whites, they are very full-bodied wines, with a high alcohol content and good acidity.
Many successes also for the Champagnes of 1983 where the harvest was abundant and extremely healthy. The wines are rich, complex and opulent but they are still rare to find today. Finally, the wines of the Rhone Valley are exceptional in every way.
Our advice for buying a 1983 wine
In Bordeaux some exceptional wines have been produced. The wines of the Margaux appellation are even judged to be better than the 1982 vintage. The sweet wines are also excellent, fruity and fine.
In Burgundy the wines obtained vary in quality, which poses a challenge for most appellations. Go for the reds of the Côte de Beaune and the excellent wines of the Côte de Nuits. The whites tend to be very full-bodied, tending more toward opulence than refined elegance because of the wet conditions at the end of the season.
The reds from the northern Rhône are superb, especially the wines in the Hermitage appellation.
