Our opinion on the 1955 vintage: a very good year for Bordeaux wines. The 1955 Bordeaux vintage is excellent, but often underestimated. It is an interesting choice for a good value for money compared to the 1953 vintages, being much more expensive. The 1955 wines in the Bordeaux region benefited from ideal weather conditions. The result is very great wines, especially in the appellations of Pauillac, Pessac Leognan, Saint Estèphe, Pomerol, Saint Emilion, Saint Julien and Margaux. The best bottles are still perfect and well preserved. As far as white wines are concerned, this was the best vintage of the mid 50‘s, with very well-balanced wines.

We talk about an exceptional vintage for the Sauternes of 1955, thanks to the very good weather conditions and the beneficial rains in September. The sweet white wines of Sauternes are fine and smooth, like the 1955 Château d‘Yquem.

In Burgundy, the warm and dry weather allowed the grapes to ripen well and the harvest was abundant. 1955 is a good vintage, the red wines of Burgundy have body and are elegant. The white wines of 1955 are of a higher quality than the reds, they are balanced and elegant.

In the Rhone Valley, the wines are of good quality, with perfect ripeness and a high natural sugar content. The Châteauneuf du Pape appellation is doing well, revealing wines with still spicy aromas.

The 1955 Champagnes are just as successful as the Sauternes, with an abundant harvest and very high-quality grapes. The result is firm, powerful and drier wines than the previous vintage.

We recommend Château Pavie 1955, La Mission Haut Brion 1955, Château Haut Brion 1955, Château Mouton Rothschild 1955 and Château Figeac 1955.

In Sauternes, we recommend Château Climens 1955, Château De Rayne Vigneau 1955, Château Lafaurye Peyraguey 1955 and Château Coutet 1955.

For Champagnes, we recommend the Grandes Maisons such as Bollinger 1955, Laurent Perrier 1955, Roederer 1955 and Veuve Clicquot 1955.
