Our opinion on the 1944 vintage : a not very satisfactory vintage for Bordeaux and of good quality for Sauternes. The Bordeaux region enjoyed fine weather until the harvest, when the rain came. The harvest was abundant but uneven because of the rains. As a result, the wines are light, short and for the most attractive, rather spicy and tasty. Somewhat disappointing, the 1944 vintage offers nevertheless red wines with finesse and relative suppleness. The Sauternes are of superior quality, despite inequalities in several areas. The sweet wines are generally soft and sappy, characteristics present in the 1944 Château Guiraud.

During this year 1944, Burgundy was liberated. Vegetation was late and the rains continued to fall. The result was a diluted and watery harvest and a poor vintage.

In the Rhone Valley, the quality of the 1944 vintage did not really stand out. However, in the southern part, some good wines were produced.

The 1944 wines of Bordeaux are very sought after today, especially the Château Mouton Rothschild 1944 or the Château Haut Brion 1944 which we recommend.

This year, Sauternes are to be preferred. Go for the Château d‘Yquem 1944 and the Château Climens 1944.
