In Bordeaux spring was cold and humid, then followed by a hot summer. The wines of 1923 are correct thanks to a certain initial charm. On the other hand, the Sauternes are of a slight superior quality, rich and gourmet but some wines have dried.
In Burgundy, the wines of the 1923 vintage are very successful. According to Jacques Puisais, «this is the second very great year of the century». Having enjoyed sunny weather during the summer the red wines are soft and mellow. The whites of Burgundy have outdone themselves, they are of a very high quality but it becomes rare to taste them.
Several successes also for the Champagnes of 1923, despite a meagre harvest. The tasting is risky but the wines still offer a tasty and pleasant tasting experience.
This year, Rhône wines are to be avoided. Producers are suffering a second year of deep bad luck. However, the 1923 vintage is slightly better than the 1922 vintage.
The 1923 vintage is undeniably better in Burgundy, with surprising first and grand crus. This vintage gains in tannic chew and liveliness, which carries it for a long time. We recommend the names Beaune, Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Romanée, Santenay and Savigny-lès-beaune.
