In Bordeaux, the vintage 1870, with 1864 and 1865, is one of the most magnificent of all the classic Bordeaux pre-phylloxera. As in 1945, the spring frosts reduced the potential harvest and an a hot summer increased the sugar content, which led to an early harvest of very ripe and concentrated wines. The best wines of this vintage are châteaux Lafite Rothschild 1870, Latour 1870, Margaux 1870 and château Mouton Rothschild 1870.

Circumstances rather favorable to the production of old ports of 1870. While considering the ravages of phylloxera on the harvests, the ports are particularly successful in this vintage.
