In 1858, an effective anti-powdery mildew treatment was discovered and applied and; as if to compensate for the previous five bad vintages, a hot summer leads to a healthy harvest towards the end of september. This year marks the beginning of an extremely prosperous period, especially for Bordeaux merchants. The Bordeaux red wines of 1858 are good. The best wines of this vintage are the châteaux Lafite 1858 and Mouton Rothschild 1858.
