Expert's opinions
The 1944 Colheita Tawny Port is a field blend bottled in 2018 with a bar-top cork, 120 grams of sugar and 21% alcohol. This has been seen before, but before IVDP approval (although I was unaware of that). Filipe Marinho says that the winery "had to make some small adjustments (filtration, etc.) for the IVDP to approve it. We released it only in October, and this is the actual wine that is being shipped." The last time I saw this, it seemed a bit overly mature, showing some signs of the fruit cracking. This seems better, a bit fresher. The juicy finish is rather spectacular. It is powerful, gripping and lively. The flavors are delectable and the unctuous texture allows this to show off its fine concentration.
