Zoom on : 1970.....40th Anniversary!

1970After three dreary vintages, 1967, 1968 and 1969, the 1970 vintage in most regions in France was a most welcome change with a fine growing season that resulted in well concentrated and well balanced wines. The best vintage between 1961 and 1982, these wines continue to shine.

The experts talk about the 1970 vintage:

Red Bordeaux : 4/5
Sweet White Bordeaux : 3/5

Michael Broadbent

“A highly important vintage in many ways: its fine quality and its timing provided a jump start to the wine boom…The weather conditions, despite ups and downs, were conducive to greatness: successful flowering, great heat and drought in July followed by an August in which coolness and hot sunny intervals were tempered by rain; then a long, hot, ripening period leading to a large and successful harvest which began in early October.”

Frank Dubourdieu

« Quantity and quality being happily converged, 1970 could be with 1966 the best vintage between 1961 and 1982….Richness and fruit, concentration and balance are the big words for this vintage that were apparent in all the Bordeaux appellations. With time, the best wines took on a profoundness, in length and finesse, much better than we could have hoped. ”

Robert Parker

“The 1970 vintage is certainly the best that we can find between the grandiose 1961 and 1982 vintages, attractive and rich with plenty of charm and complexity.”

Red Rhone : 4/5

Michael Broadbent

“An excellent year in the south and a very good year in the north. Good vintage in Chateauneuf, better still in Hermitage…These wines are still worth looking out for.”

Porto : 5/5

Michael Broadbent

“Ideal growing and harvesting conditions. An outstanding vintage. This is classic port still on a seemingly limitless plateau of maturity.”

Robert Parker

“Outstanding”

Champagne : 4/5

Michael Broadbent:

“Good, fairly substantial wines and the best keeping well.”

Robert Parker

“Above average to excellent”

Red Burgundy : 3/5

Michael Broadbent:

“Another of those vintages about which one can say it ‘came in with a bang, left with a whimper’. The wines lacked grip and, though initially attractive, also lacked stamina.

Robert Parker

“Above average to excellent”
